Helix Industries (or, Number Twenty-Three the Second)
Just below this is my rant on the movie The Number 23, and how it was suspiciously
close to my NaNo-novel #23. Well, if you've looked at my links page recently
you'll see that I've started adapting #23 into a comic, Helix Industries.
I'm quite fond of this new title. It refers to the corporation owned by the
main antagonist of the story.
So, not too long ago I submitted my site to Google. A couple of weeks ago
(I've been slow at updating this site, haven't I?) I did a search to see if
my site had been listed yet. And it turns out that Helix Industries is the
name of a real company. They make cleaning supplies.
I give up.
Fortunately, I think I've got trademark law on my side here. I'm not making
cleaning supplies, and they're not making comics, so we don't step on each
others toes. This actually carries some weight legally--trademark law prevents
me from selling cleaning supplies under that name, but doesn't prevent me
from creating, say, a burger resteraunt called Nike, since Nike makes shoes
and not burgers. (This is why Apple Records and Apple Computers had a big
fight when iTunes was launched.)
But still. This is getting ridiculous.
